Welcome New Computer Lab Students!

           Computer Lab Orientation

Prerequisites and requirements

The only pre-requisite is that the student must be enrolled in a program at the IEL, regardless of location. In other words, any student wanting to use the computer lab or take classes in the computer lab MUST be registered in either ESL, ABE, GED or a Reading Refresher course like Read Right.

Expectation

The classes are designed to meet your individual need so that you can progress at your own pace. Instructors will do everything they can to help you. Your continuation in the program is based upon the following:

Layout

The lab at AEC is divided into two parts. The upper lab (room 108) is used for classes like ESL, Reading Labs or Family Care classes that have large numbers of people at one time. The lower lab (room 107) is used for individuals that are working in curriculums that are self-paced, GED, internet research, documents or email.

Bathrooms are located outside lab; Go outside of the lab and into the main hall, then turn left to the vey end, and they are on the left. Ask the instructor to show you if needed.

Schedule

Typically the labs are open Monday to Thursday and are closed Fridays. The individual lab times and instructors vary. Check here for further information.

Class Sign in

The class sign-in sheet is located on a table in front of the door as you come into the lower lab. If you are coming from another class and you are signing in and out there, you do not have to sign in or out here. However, if you are coming in during off hours and have not signed in anywhere else, then signing in here ensures that the hours will be included in your attendance file.

Data Disks and Folders

Data disk and lab folders are set up in the "My Documents" folder located on the desktop.
Inside of "My Documents" is a folder called "Students". If you do not have a folder with your name on it, create one inside of the student folder. Be sure to use your first and last name. If you need assistance, ask your instructor.

The data files are also located on the computer lab web site: http://www.arconlab.com/IEL/computerlab/. Click on the "Data Files and Tests" link on the top left.

Reference and Class Materials

Dictionary and book locations: Dictionaries and Phone books are located on the islands in the lower lab or at the front of the room in the upper lab. The text books are all located in the lower lab inside of the black cabinet. All textbooks and CDs and Reference materials are to stay in the lab.

Computer Settings

The computers are set up with a logon so that students cannot change settings or save software on the computers. Some lessons will teach you how to manipulate the system and will not work on the lab computers, so the lessons that reference system settings are for reference or home use only. On your own home computers it is possible that by changing system settings the computer will operate and react very differently than when you started it. It is important to remember: Shutting off and restarting the computer will not reset these settings Make your choices very carefully. It is wise to write down system settings before you change them, so that they can be changed back if there are undesirable consequences.
DO NOT CHANGE SETTINGS ON THE SCHOOL COMPUTERS.
This class will ONLY show you where these settings are located and how to adjust them, and basically what they are used for.
